WHAT IS ART?

What comes to mind when you think of art?  Paintings?  Sculptures?  Drawings?  Sure, all of them are forms of art, but there is a lot more: fashion design, jewelry making, architect, graffiti, video art, photography and so on.  In this blog you will see different forms of art....maybe not what you would expect. 

Here's a website that I found once while surfing on the web.  I think the guy is awesome!  Go to the website and click on his works of art.  Some of them have a video to show you how it was done.  Enjoy!

Now watch these two youtube videos.....another form of art.  The first one was made by Francisco Quinones, a student who studied graphic design at Columbia.  The second one was made by Prof. Raul Moris.  Make sure you have your speakers on.

THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is coming up. Many people take this time to thank God, but I think we should thank Him everyday of our lives. Most of us are thankful for our family and friends.  Share 3 SPECIFIC things you are thankful for.  Most of us are thankful for our family and friends, but I want your post to be a little different.  If you say family and/or friends, describe a specific thing about that person or a specific moment in life you have shared. 


SAMPLE:
1.I'm grateful I am bilingual.  Thanks to my mom, my grandparents, my aunt and uncle, I learned to speak Spanish since I was little.  My aunt even gave my cousin, my sister, and me classes teaching us how to read and write in Spanish.  It's sad that today many Puerto Ricans living in the US don't or can't speak Spanish because their parents talk to them in English all the time.  They're going to learn English in school anyways.  Thanks to being bilingual I can enjoy movies, books, music, etc. in both languages without having someone translate it for me.  Some things are lost in translations.

2. I was born and raised in Chicago.  At the age of 17, I moved to Puerto Rico.  At first I didn't like it, but today I am grateful that my family decided to move here.  I have gotten to learn about my roots and about the beautiful places on the island.  I still miss Chicago, but nothing compares to the beautiful beaches, sunrises, sunsets, and the natural scenery on the island.

3. Above all I am thankful for my son. He is the light of my life. I had problems getting pregnant but the Lord answered my prayers. He sometimes drives me up a wall (LOL!) but he definitely makes me laugh. I am so proud of him. He's funny, intelligent, and very loving!  One of the things that makes him so special is that EVERYDAY he tells me he loves me.  At 19 he still kisses and hugs me even if his friends are present.

On October 24, 2013 we had the opportunity to visit House of Phobia in San Juan.  I hope you had a great time.  I know I did.  Below are two assignments:  one for the ones who attended the field trip and another one for those who did not.  Please read carefully and follow the instructions.

Blog assignment for those who attended the field trip:

Answer the following questions in complete sentences.  Please be SPECIFIC!  Copy the questions.  Leave a space in blank after each response.  Publish your answers on the blog.

1.  What did you like most about the field trip?

2.  What didn't you like? 

3.  Describe your reaction inside the labyrinth.  (4-5 sentences)

4.  What would you say about the field trip to your classmates who did not go?

5.  Mention 3 places you would recommend to go on future field trips.


Assignment for those who did NOT go on the field trip:

Oral Report:  Prepare a PowerPoint with 5 tourist attractions.  Minimum 3 sentences per slide.  NO READING!

DID YOU KNOW....?

The  image many people have of Puerto Rico is not a very positive one.  We are seen as lazy people being maintained by the the United States.  However, there is the flip side of the coin.  Here is a video to show you reality....no politics, just numbers.  What do you think?  (The video is in Spanish.)

TASK:  Watch the video and then write your reaction to the video.  Did you know this information already?  Was there anything that stood out for you?  What do you think we can or should do to change this negative image?  (Paragraph: 5-8 sentences).

Welcome to English 1102 and to blogging. During this quarter you will have the opportunity to read entries on different topics, comment on the entries, and see what your classmates think.
